Conserving Indian Geoheritage: the Geopark Approach

Marble rocks, Jabalpur is a scenic geoheritage site situated in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The river Narmada has carved its way through the soft marble rocks to create a wide gorge. It is an archive of geographical changes which took millions of years to form and is a worthy spot to be on the UNESCO world geoheritage list.
Abstract: Through a balanced blend of science, culture, education and tourism, geopark networks across the world are successfully improving the socio-economic condition of communities, thereby contributing to sustainable development of the region. India, with numerous geosites of significance, needs to learn from experiences world over and take a leap of faith to build its first global geopark.
