Periurban India

A periurban area is a by-product of unsystematic and uncontrolled urban growth and sprawl, especially in developing countries. Smaller cities like Salhundi, near Mysore in Karnataka is an example of such a sprawl.
Abstract: India’s periurban centres can play a crucial role in creating a balanced urbanisation structure. Yet, they are often left out in the planning process. The essay highlights the concerns of these neither-rural-nor-urban centres and brings forth the ramifications of ignoring these spaces in the Indian context.

(ii) at least 75 per cent of the male working population was non-agricultural. (iii) a density of population of at least 400 per sq km (1000 per sq m).
